Hello friend,
How are you travelling? I have been thinking about you a lot. I saw a hat that I thought would look cool on you, today. I am not sure that you would wear it, but I saw it and thought of you. It’s nice, isn’t it? Not the hat, since I didn’t buy it for you, but that someone is thinking of you, especially when they see a hat! I read something the other day that we are in other people’s thoughts all the time without us knowing. Songs that were danced or sung along with reminding us of others, movies that we love, or books we have read, small reminders. I think about you and others all the time. I suppose there is some comfort in knowing we matter, we were here and made an impact.
I had had some epiphanies of late. It’s because I have Marie Kondo’ed my cognitive space. Less distractions. A better job. New ideas and purpose. Sometimes things happen for the best reason, even if we don’t see it at the time. Or maybe we just adapt and work our way around it, like the man in India who worked for decades to build a road through the mountain, instead of having to go around it, after his wife died and they couldn’t get to hospital in time. He found purpose and changed lives, even after the worst thing happened to him.
I have been seeing a lot of friends lately and talking to them on the phone, also. I read that Aristotle said there are three types of friendship:
-
Friendships of utility
-
Friendships of pleasure
-
Friendships of the good
Friendships of utility are those where people are on friendly terms mainly due to the benefits each brings to the table. Workmates, gym buddies, and schoolmates are examples. These are impermanent friendships.
Friendships of pleasure are those where people find each other because of the enjoyment it brings. People hanging out due to shared interests in fishing, or drinking, or
Friendships of the good, are the deepest and most wonderful of the three. These are friendships based upon respect, appreciation for each other’s qualities, and a strong will to aid and assist the other person because one recognises the others greatness. It is a mutual connection of give and take and support.
The older we get, the more we cultivate friendships of the good. These are the friendships that make you feel uplifted and joyous when you see each other. You admire them so much, and the fact that they love you is just the icing on the cake.
I feel that way about you, which is why I nearly bought you the hat. It’s a weird present isn’t it? But then our friendship is based on mutual loves of weird stuff.
I miss you, but I know you’re okay, and that everything will work out for you, because it always does. Even when it doesn’t seem to go your way. Trust in the process.
I will write soon, I promise.
Stay purposeful, even if it’s just doing the dishes, or sorting out some books, or helping a neighbour with their rubbish bins. There is always something to be done, someone to help.
Much love,
Kate
